I feel that suspending a student for a game or two is a perfectly fine if they are getting bad grades in school. It will teach them that they can't do what they love, unless they work hard. A talk from the parents is not as effective as taking away sports temporarily. This also works with kids who do not play sports. The school can take away after school activities, school events, and recess. It is crucial that the school addresses the students about the importance of grades and how they are required for collage. Some parents don't tell their kids until it is too late.
